Art Therapy for Kids
Kids can really struggle with expressing their needs and wants when going through grief and loss, even when your kiddo is open about what’s going on. Helping children express grief through drawing, painting, and play-based approaches in a safe and supportive environment. Please be mindful that I am not a play therapist, and I am happy to offer a referral when needed. I do offer kid-friendly tools like Squishmallows to cuddle with and child-centered art supplies like chubby conté crayons or Model Magic. I encourage art-making as a form of play to understand experiences as well as process feelings and thoughts that aren’t so easy for a child to talk about. Some examples may be creating a house from recyclables, clay figures, or textile toys.
Art Therapy for Teens
Adolescence is the season of life when childhood is still present, but adulthood is knocking at the door, LOUDLY. It’s tough to navigate new territory when A LOT is going on physiologically, socially, and emotionally. Art therapy is designed to be a creative space for teens to process emotions, build coping skills, and feel understood. Art therapy gives teens a voice in art-making while figuring out who they are and what they want in life, especially in the midst of grief and loss. A unique experience for parents is that some teens may be eligible by law to consent to treatment as an adult. That’s a big step.
Please be aware that Maryland law recognizes teens starting at age 16 to consent to services. Parents and caregivers are not left in the dark, though, and I’m happy to discuss further what that will look like in art therapy. Teens who just turned 18 can still have some caregiver support. Transitioning into adulthood doesn’t come with a compass sometimes, especially if you want to start or continue mental health services as a young adult.
Art Therapy for Adults
Life hits fast when you’re carrying responsibilities and accountability. It all begins to feel too much. Life does not slow down when you want it to or need it to. Art therapy supports navigating grief, loss, and life transitions through reflective and expressive art practices tailored to meet your treatment needs. Art therapy is not just for kiddos and teens. Adults benefit too! It’s okay if you haven’t drawn since grade school; you do not have to be Michelangelo’s ancestor. Natural talent and artistic gifts are great, but not necessary to reap the benefits in art therapy. Art therapy focuses on the process and the progress by using creative means and art-based principles and elements. Art therapy is meant to be accessible and flexible. This is meant to be tailored to your unique treatment needs and is meant to be intentional and purposeful.
The Art Therapy Process
Art therapy is a psychotherapy, not simply a modality.
We start with an intake …
The intake packet and all the forms that come with the intake are critical to beginning this process. Informed consent, billing, assessments, and questionnaires, oh my! The intake helps plan towards your unique treatment needs and makes this process clear as to what to expect.
Intentional Collaboration
You’re part of the process. We keep communication open and decisions shared—no black boxes or surprises.
Treatment with Purpose
Every project is different. We stay flexible and responsive to make sure the process fits your flow—not the other way around.
Preparing to Leave
When we deliver, it’s not just a finished product—it’s a solution you can trust, backed by real care and effort.
